Acoustic Felt by the Meter, 10 mm – Self-Adhesive, Made of PES

With self-adhesive PES acoustic felt, you can improve room acoustics and add a modern textile finish to walls, ceilings, furniture, or custom acoustic elements.

The open-cell fiber structure absorbs some of the incoming sound energy. This reduces unwanted sound reflections and reverberation. This can improve speech intelligibility and create a more pleasant atmosphere - for example, in an office, home office, conference room, or living area.

Tested Sound Absorption

The acoustic performance of the 10-mm-thick PES needle-punched felt was tested by the Center for Acoustics & Dynamics at the Technical University of Braunschweig.

In the diffuse sound field, the following sound absorption coefficients, among others, were measured:

  • α = 0.40 at 1,000 Hz

  • α = 0.60 at 1,250 Hz

  • α = 0.85 at 2,000 Hz

  • α = 0.97 at 3,150 Hz

As a result, the material exhibits significant sound absorption, particularly in the mid- and high-frequency ranges. The actual effect in the room depends on the surface area used, the positioning, and the overall configuration.

Self-adhesive and easy to install

The back is coated with a dispersion acrylate adhesive and protected by a removable protective film. To install, remove the film, carefully align the felt, and press it down evenly.

The adhesive is suitable for many stable and relatively flat surfaces. The surface should be clean, dry, dust-free, and free of grease. For delicate, coated, or unknown surfaces, it is recommended to perform an adhesion test in an inconspicuous area first.

Can be customized

The fabric sold by the meter can be cut to size to fit your project. For clean edges, we recommend using a sharp utility knife, a suitable cutting mat, and a sturdy metal ruler.

Typical Applications

  • Wall and Ceiling Paneling

  • Homemade acoustic panels

  • Offices and meeting rooms

  • Home Offices and Workspaces

  • Living Spaces

  • Furniture and Partition Wall Paneling

  • Retail, Trade Show, and Interior Design

  • Vehicle and RV Interior Finishing

Please note: Acoustic felt improves the acoustics within a room. It does not replace structural sound insulation between different rooms.

Application

The 10-mm-thick self-adhesive PES acoustic felt is suitable for rooms where hard surfaces strongly reflect sound, resulting in reverberation or a reverberant acoustic environment. Typical examples include rooms with glass surfaces, plastered walls, concrete, wood, or minimal fabric furnishings.

The self-adhesive backing makes it easy to install on suitable, smooth, and sturdy surfaces. The felt can be used to cover an entire surface or as a single acoustic panel. Since it is sold by the meter, it can be cut to size and then applied directly to the prepared surface.

Typical applications include:

  • wall and ceiling panels; DIY acoustic panels
  • Offices and meeting rooms
  • Home Offices and Workspaces
  • Living Rooms, Music Rooms, and Hobby Rooms
  • Furniture and Partition Wall Paneling
  • Retail, Trade Show, and Interior Design
  • Vehicle and RV Interior Finishing

For good adhesion, the surface should be clean, dry, dust-free, grease-free, and as smooth as possible. Remove the protective film before installation. Then position the felt and press it down evenly. Especially when working on larger surfaces, it is recommended to proceed carefully and in sections.

The acoustic effect was measured. In the mid- and high-frequency ranges, the measured sound absorption increases significantly. The extent to which room acoustics change depends, among other things, on the surface area used, its position in the room, and the overall structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does felt improve room acoustics?

Yes. The fiber structure absorbs some of the incident sound energy. This helps reduce unwanted reflections and reverberation. The room can feel quieter, and speech can become clearer.

Has the acoustic performance been tested?

Yes. The sound absorption of the 10-mm-thick PES needle-punched felt was measured. In a diffuse sound field, the following values, among others, were determined:

α = 0.40 at 1,000 Hz
α = 0.85 at 2,000 Hz
α = 0.97 at 3,150 Hz

The results show significant sound absorption, particularly in the mid- and high-frequency ranges.

Does the felt block out noise from other rooms?

Acoustic felt is primarily designed to reduce reflections and reverberation within a room. It is not a substitute for structural sound insulation in walls, doors, or ceilings.

How much acoustic felt is needed?

It is not possible to provide a general figure in square meters. The amount needed depends on the size of the room, the available surfaces, and the desired result. As a general rule, the larger the effectively placed felt surface, the more noticeable the acoustic effect will be.

For larger projects, it is advisable to start by implementing the plan in a small area and then evaluate the results.

Can I cut the felt myself?

Yes. For straight, clean edges, we recommend a sharp utility knife, a sturdy cutting mat, and a metal ruler. With a material thickness of 10 mm, several controlled cuts may be necessary.

How is the self-adhesive acoustic felt installed?

The self-adhesive version has an adhesive backing with a peel-off protective film. After cutting to size, remove the protective film, position the felt on the prepared surface, and press it down evenly.

For larger surfaces, the protective film should not be removed all at once. It is best to work in sections, carefully align the felt, and then press it down firmly.

What kind of surface is suitable?

Suitable substrates are clean, dry, dust-free, grease-free, load-bearing, and as smooth as possible surfaces to which acrylic emulsion adhesive adheres.

Highly textured, porous, dusty, damp, greasy, loose, or coated surfaces can impair adhesion. Therefore, adhesion should first be tested in an inconspicuous area.

Can the felt adhere to wood-grain wallpaper or heavily textured plaster?

Highly textured surfaces are only suitable to a limited extent because the adhesive does not make full contact with the surface. This can result in reduced adhesion. For such surfaces, a test should be conducted in advance using a small sample.

Can the felt be removed again?

The self-adhesive version is designed for permanent attachment. When removed, depending on the surface, it may leave adhesive residue or cause damage or peeling of paint, wallpaper, or coatings. You should test its suitability beforehand, especially on delicate surfaces.

Can the felt be used on curved surfaces?

Slightly curved surfaces are generally possible. For tight radii, you should first test with a small sample to see if the 10-mm-thick felt can conform sufficiently and if the adhesive backing adheres securely.

How do you clean acoustic felt?

Dust and loose dirt can be removed with a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner set to low power. Light stains should be gently dabbed with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing, soaking, and harsh cleaning agents.

Is the felt suitable for vehicles?

The felt can be used for trim in vehicle and RV interiors. Before use, check whether the surface is suitable for the self-adhesive backing and whether any special fire, safety, or certification requirements apply to the specific vehicle or component.

Is the felt suitable for public areas?

Use in publicly accessible buildings depends on the requirements of the specific project. If specific fire safety or material certifications are required, it must be verified in advance whether the necessary certifications are available for this product.
